Following on from Hot Black’s first Supagrind café in Spring Street, the Supagrind concept is now popping up in some of Melbourne’s most iconic buildings. Whilst most café rollouts tend to replicate its aesthetic and concept, our approach is to adopt and integrate seamlessly within the lobby architecture and to ‘never cut the cookie twice’.
222 Exhibition Street’s inspiration was taken from the buildings geometric architectural approach. The idea was to develop a pixelated 3D image of a café while looking through the newly renovated entry lobby. For customers visiting the café, the journey deepens as they approach the counter. There is an appreciation for the texture of the black, white & grey floor and wall finishes.
The intent for 664 Collins Street was to align it with the lobby detail – elegant, yet simple. With a monochromatic palate, interesting details such as penny round tiles and custom booth joinery mirrored the existing curved columns that can be found throughout the space. Flexible furniture was also key in allowing this space to accommodate more than just everyday patrons, rethinking the way lobby spaces can be used.
