Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre | Burwood East (VIC)
Project overview: Burwood Brickworks Shopping Centre is an award-recognised retail precinct in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs, built as part of the broader Burwood Brickworks community. The centre combines everyday convenience with a strong sustainability agenda, including an Eat Street dining precinct and an urban rooftop farm.
Why it matters: The project was designed to challenge the idea that retail and sustainability sit in conflict. The built outcome prioritises human comfort, material health and long-term operational performance.
Sustainability highlights:
- First retail centre globally to achieve Living Building Challenge® Petal Certification
- 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built recognition (GBCA)
- Australia’s first urban rooftop farm within a shopping centre (2,000sqm)
- Non-toxic, “Red List” free material approach for key building components
Design notes: NH Architecture’s approach uses biophilic cues, reclaimed and recycled material language, and layered sensory experiences. Key architectural moves include textured facade expression and a sawtooth roof form that references the site’s industrial history, with interior storytelling linked to Country through collaborative artwork.
Traditional Country: Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung.
