Project overview
Goldie Canteen is a modern Asian-inspired canteen located on the ground floor of Novotel Melbourne Central. Despite its hotel setting, the venue avoids a typical lobby restaurant feel. Instead, it delivers a bright, energetic space suited to daily trade from breakfast through to evening service.
Led in the kitchen by chef Michael Smith (formerly of Tonka and Mamasita), the concept blends strong culinary identity with a casual, accessible format. The interior supports fast-paced daytime turnover while maintaining visual interest for longer evening dining.
Design direction
Designed by BrandWorks, the interior balances bold personality with clean geometry. Black-and-white tiled floors, neon signage and statement lighting establish a playful yet structured environment.
The design ensures the space feels distinct from its hotel context, with clear zoning and a strong front-of-house presence that draws street-level traffic.

Design insights
1. Hotel-integrated venues need street presence.
Strong visual cues at entry ensure the restaurant reads independently from the hotel environment.
2. Graphic flooring defines space.
Patterned tiles create zoning without building partitions, helping maintain openness.
3. Lighting drives mood transition.
Layered lighting allows breakfast brightness and softer evening ambience within the same footprint.
4. Durable furniture protects margins.
High-frequency venues require commercial-grade seating and stable bases to manage daily resets and cleaning.
